How Mentorship Transforms Lives
Sometimes, the universe brings gifts that change your life. For me, one of those gifts was meeting Glensi Dayana Coxolca Tohom, my student scholar in SHE-CAN—a nonprofit that supports young women worldwide through mentorship and education.
Being a SHE-CAN mentor has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life, especially because Glensi is an extraordinary person. Her courage and determination inspire me daily, and seeing her take on every challenge with confidence gives me so much hope for the future.
For women looking for a meaningful volunteer experience, I can’t recommend SHE-CAN enough. Together with a team of other women, mentors commit to a five-year journey to guide scholars through the U.S. college application process and provide support throughout their four years of college. These young women then return to their countries to lead and improve their communities.
If I could bet on the future, I’d place a high stake on Glensi being President of Guatemala one day. This summer, she executed a project to empower other indigenous girls with job skills while preserving their culture. As a college freshman, her project management skills rival those of seasoned professionals, and her impact will be felt for years.
I’m also grateful for the incredible mentors on our team: Donna Fleetwood, Leah Gettens, Karen Dixon, and Kristine Duffy. Not only did we get matched with an amazing scholar, but we were also matched with each other—a group of remarkable women who make this journey even more rewarding.
Glensi, congratulations on your incredible program! This is just the beginning, and we’re thrilled to watch your journey continue. 💜🔥🚀
