The Politics of Gender Equality

On this beautiful Sunday morning in DC, I’d like to address a question I hear often: “Why have you gotten so political lately?”

It’s a fair question, especially as I spend much of my day leading a non-profit dedicated to gender equality in the future of crypto, blockchain, and digital finance. Although the organization is apolitical and focused on education and advocacy, its mission is deeply affected by the political climate.

If you don’t believe a gender rights battle is happening in America, you may not be paying attention. Recent polling on “Face the Nation” shows a stark divide: 84% of those who believe gender equality efforts are “going too far” support Trump. This is despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade and its impact on women’s health and lives, the persistent pay gap, and our painfully slow progress toward true equality.

Meanwhile, 86% of those who think we’re “not going far enough” plan to vote for Harris. For those who feel we’re “about right,” support is split, with 54% leaning toward Harris.

Consider this: some now argue that the U.S. should reconsider women’s suffrage, despite women gaining the right to vote just over a century ago in 1920. The idea that this fundamental right could be questioned as we approach the potential election of the first female president is unsettling.

During my time at the DOJ, I saw the Trump administration shut down all DEI initiatives, halting the work of our DEI Committee in the Criminal Division. If Trump returns to office, there is little doubt that his administration will push even harder to roll back women’s rights.

It took generations to secure these rights, yet they can vanish in an instant. To the women who believed Roe was untouchable, I urge you to take this election seriously—your rights are on the line.

This isn’t a single-issue race, but it’s a significant one.
